‘A clean desk is a sign of a cluttered desk drawer’

Have you ever interviewed a candidate that seemed perfect for the role but once they started things did not look as good?

This is something that almost every recruiting professional or manager has stumbled across. The reason why this happens is that people put their best foot forward when they come in for an interview. At the end of the day, everyone wants to be liked, accepted and land their dream job. As such candidates are very unlikely to show their true selves during the recruitment process as they fear rejection.

During the interview, the candidates are likely to adjust their body language, tone of voice, energy and thinking to match the one of the interviewers. As this part of the recruitment cycle is the first that requires a face to face interaction the connection that both parties form and impression they make will have a big impact on their follow-up interactions.

It is very difficult for a recruiting profession to remain objective at all times. There are some candidates they like more and sometimes this is based on that first impression the candidate has made. The prospective employee that usually moves on to the next stage of the recruitment cycle is the one that has made the best impression and has convinced the interviewer that they are the right person for the job.

However, looks can be deceiving. The behavior that the candidate projects during the interview is not always genuine and does not give you the full picture. This is why sometimes when we recruit a candidate that embodies everything we want from an employee can turn out not to be the right fit.

Nowadays there are additional screening methods that can assist you and your organization in making an objective and well-informed decision when recruiting for a role. There are several types of psychometric tests that can be used before the interviewing phase so that you save time and resources, and find a candidate that not only looks like the ideal man for the job but also it is the right one!
